Research Professor Non-Communicable Diseases: Healthy Aging

The mission of the Department of Public Health of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is to conduct public health research of international standing, provide postgraduate education of high quality and engage in service delivery with the ultimate goal to advance global health. The department is organized in multidisciplinary units, including public health specialists, epidemiologists, social scientists and health economists.
The research Group of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is dedicated to address the globally rising burden of chronic NCDs, particularly in vulnerable populations and low resource settings. Parallel to this increasing burden, and also driven by accelerated demographic and epidemiological transitions, populations around the world are aging faster with age-related health disparities gaps widening and impacting all aspects of society.
The research and academic activities of the Group relate to prevention and control of NCDs, from an epidemiological perspective, and with an emphasis on identifying determinants of NCDs development. The Group’s focus in quantitative methods and modeling for the characterization of NCDs burden, and the formulation and evaluation of effective strategies to address them. Coinciding with the proclamation of the Decade of Healthy Aging 2021-2030 by the United Nations in December 2020, the research Group of NCDs is strengthening its activities to study healthy aging domains particularly in the context of metabolic and physiological health (chronic NCDs, and their interaction with infectious diseases), and considering also physical capability, cognitive function, and social and psychological wellbeing.
We are now seeking to recruit a second professor in the NCD group dedicated to develop and lead public health research on Healthy Aging, with focus on low and middle income countries. This position would be as a Research Professor, with 80% of time spent on research.
Assignment
Develop a research portfolio in the above field, to strengthen awareness of NCDs as major contributor to years lived with disabilities globally, and provide an evidence-base for context-specific interventions
Apply for, and secure internal and external competitive funding, including applying for an European Research Council grant, to build the research team and develop the programme
Closely collaborate with other researchers in the NCD research Group, the Department of Public Health and the Institute, aiming for synergy and joint projects
Develop partnerships and international reputation and visibility of ITM’s work in this field
Explore and lead novel collaborations with Flemish academic centra
Establish novel research collaborations with international partners in low and middle income countries and build capacity through relevant research and education activities.
Attract and mentor Master and PhD students
Contribute to development of teaching activities on healthy aging within ITM’s post-graduate courses and the MSc in Public Health Provide expert advice to national and international stakeholders in the field
P
rofile
PhD in a biomedical research domain that is relevant to the above-described assignment
Master in biomedical sciences, and (additionally) preferably in Public Health (MPH)
Recognised internationally as leading researcher, or either be a researcher with high research potential, in the field of the epidemiology of NCDs and healthy aging, demonstrated by a matching excellent output of high-quality, peer-reviewed research. You have a well-developed strategy for future research that has the potential to result in world-leading publications
Track record of successful high level competitive grant writing as principal investigator
Strong expertise in epidemiological methods and quantitative research, including effectiveness evaluation of public health strategies
Existing network of research collaborators
Affinity with qualitative and systems methods is an asset
Experience in postgraduate teaching, and MSc and PhD thesis supervision
Leader, mentor, and strong communicator
Fluent in English. A good command of Dutch or willingness to learn is desirable. Knowledge of other languages such as French or Spanish is an asset

A full-time appointment. Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professsor, professor or full professor. The salary set will be in line with the pay scales of ITM and the Flemish universities and to your work experience with supplementary benefits, such as public transport subscription and/or bicycle fee, private pension scheme and meal voucher subscription.
