The Centre for Innovation in Mental Health in the School of Psychology is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Research Assistant / Research Fellow to work on an innovative AMS-funded programme:  Investigating mechanisms of change and their neural underpinnings in patients with tic disorders receiving habit reversal training.
This is a full-time post. It will be offered for 12 months.
The aim of the research programme is to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neural underpinnings of the urge to tic. Tourette syndrome / tic disorders are disorders that are classified as both psychiatric and neurological. This programme investigates how the urge to tic changes over the course of the treatment and how the neural correlates of the urge change after behavioural therapy.
The post-holder will provide day-to-day support for a variety of research activities, which will involve coding tic-events in video recordings, analysing tic- und urge data, questionnaire data, pre-processing and analysing fMRI and EEG data, aiding in the write-up and publication of findings.
This post is suitable for applicants who have an interest in Tourette syndrome and related disorders, therapeutic mechanisms, and neuroscience.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a mature attitude to work and the ability to work independently. Tic-coding and pre-processing of EEG data require attention to detail and the ability to sustain attention over long periods of time.
The candidate will work with Dr. Brandt on an AMS-funded, exciting project testing the effects of behavioural therapy on the neural correlates of the urge to tic in children and adults with Tourette syndrome. Tics are video-recorded and will need to be coded for analysis. Behavioural data is collected before and after each session. The research fellow will mainly pre-process and analyse behavioural, fMRI and EEG data, code tic-videos, and help write up the findings. The research fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in cutting edge translational patient research.
The candidate will have a PhD and strong background in neuropsychology, or related fields and show evidence of working independently, excellent organisation skills, team-work abilities, excellent writing skills, and statistical expertise. It is strongly desirable that the applicant has prior experience in neuroscience data pre-processing and / or analysis. Other criteria are: autonomy through all stages of cognitive brain-imaging experimentation, sound knowledge of experimental design and statistical methods, and proven ability to express ideas and disseminate findings effectively and good writing skills. Applicants should be able to work independently as well as co-operate with other members of the research team.
Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
You should submit your completed online application form at  ****. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above. If you need any assistance, please call Holly Shergold (Recruitment Team) on 44 (0) 23 8059 6803, or email  ****
