A record of two years teaching at the college level. An exhibition record and professional achievement that reflect promise of significant achievement in the field, and an active studio practice that engages contemporary issues. Evidence of commitment to or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of glass-working techniques. Experience teaching glass art from a multidisciplinary perspective. Experience overseeing and maintaining a glass art studio facility. Minimum 2 years teaching experience at the college level after MFA. Experience teaching at all levels of instruction, including studio foundations and seminar classes for art majors focusing on contemporary issues. Ability to teach in secondary studio areas outside primary assignment. Ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration with other academic programs or the community. Administrative or organizational experience including but not limited to supervisory responsibilities, budget management, ordering and managing supply inventory. Bilingual candidates will be given preference.
Responsibilities:
This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching, professional development, and service to the department and university. Art studio faculty carry a 3/3 course load (following three semesters at 2/2 for incoming faculty), and teaching assignments are based on the qualifications of the individual and the needs of the department. Teach contemporary glass art practice at all levels, incorporating traditional and innovative glass art methods to engage students of varied backgrounds. Fostering safe use of the equipment all physical aspects of the glass studio facility: studio maintenance, equipment repair, ordering necessary supplies, and overseeing student workers. Providing safety training and overseeing safe use of the equipment. Advising and mentoring students. Department and university committee work. The candidate will initiate programmatic changes to further the growth of the glass art program. The candidate will also maintain active involvement in creative research resulting in public exhibition and engagement with a wide audience beyond the region. Commitment to collegiality and teamwork within department, college, and university is essential.
The Department:
The Department of Art and Art History is NASAD accredited. The Department offers BA options in Art Education, Art History, and Art Studio; and a BFA program with options in Art Studio and Interior Architecture. An MA is offered in Art History. The Department of Art and Art History faculty members are a dedicated group of artists and scholars deeply involved in art, pedagogy, and in bringing our work out of the classroom into our communities. Our students reflect the campus's diversity (32% Latinx, 41% White, 4% Asian, 4% African American, 5% multiracial). They push boundaries and produce reflective work for our galleries and other public venues that engage with contemporary issues. We have eleven full-time faculty, a large pool of part-time faculty, and five staff. The studio areas are well equipped with labs for ceramics, drawing, digital media, glass, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The glass studio is approximately 2,000 square feet, with a single furnace, two glory holes, multiple annealing and casting kilns, and a wide range of cold-working equipment. Art History has strengths in Mesoamerican, Medieval, and Modern, with specialists in postcolonial and critical race studies, feminism and gender studies, structuralism and semiotics. Art Education has strengths in Cultural Diversity in Art Education and Japanese Pop Culture. The Ira Latour Visual Resources Center is an award-winning learning/teaching center that houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos, and digital images. Other important artistic teaching resources include the University Art Gallery, which presents exhibitions of regional- and nationally-based artists, and the Janet Turner Print Museum, which produces exhibitions and maintains an extensive permanent study collection. Chico is a town with a vibrant arts community. It is located three hours north of the Bay Area and one and a half hours north of Sacramento, offering easy access to major art activity.
