Job Description:
General Summary:
Provides supervisory and instructional support for University Biology professors and students in Eaton Hall.
Job duties:
Initial Coordination of Laboratory Experiments:
Ensures that a Laboratory Schedule and experimental protocols are obtained from the faculty for each quarter. Prepares prep notes, confirms adequate inventory, supplies, and equipment, and submits orders to the Eaton Hall Laboratory Manager. Some additional ordering required. Coordinates procurement of gases with gas vendor and Facilities Management.
Preparation and Handling of Chemicals and Equipment:
Provides all Teaching assistants (TAs) with information related to the experiments to be supported in the laboratory, in advance. Trains TAs and Preppers on Inventory Control, safe handling of hazardous materials, the safe and proper use of equipment, and hazardous waste collection.
Coordinates the use of apparatus, laboratory instruments and other support materials required for assigned courses with the Eaton Hall Laboratory Manager and the Chemistry Lab Coordinator. Will prepare some upper division laboratory experiments.
Set-up, Clean-up, and Dismantling of Experiments
Verifies that all assigned experiments are properly prepared and set-up prior to each experiment. Ensures each experiment is dismantled after completion and that chemicals and biologicals are properly stored or disposed of.
Along with the Chemistry Lab Coordinator, ensures that all laboratory facilities are kept clean and that equipment and glassware are adequately cleaned and returned to proper storage locations on a daily basis. Keeps issue rooms and laboratories stocked, maintained, and clean.
Safety, Experimental Procedure, and Clean-up in the Laboratory:
Assists the Chemistry Lab Coordinator and Eaton Hall Lab Manager in supervising students, enforcing safety and security in the laboratories.
Advises TAs on supervision of student's proper usage of chemicals and equipment during the experiment, as well as, ensuring proper return of chemicals and equipment and cleaning the workspace used at the conclusion of each lab section.
Assists in conducting frequent checks of the labs to ensure compliance with experimental and safety procedures, as well as hazardous waste disposal. Some upper division demonstrations of equipment may be required.
Laboratory Facility:
Shared responsibility with the Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator and Laboratory Manager for keeping laboratory facilities in operating order.
Inventory of Chemicals, Biologicals, and Equipment:
Ensures a current inventory of equipment, apparatus, and supplies in Eaton Hall are kept, through inventory control. Assists in a large-scale, yearly inventory of equipment, apparatus, and supplies.
Chemical and Equipment Handling and Disposal:
Ensures that proper labeling and warnings are posted for all chemicals. Responsible for proper disposal of chemicals and biologicals following completion of laboratory assignments.
Works with the Laboratory Manager and Chemistry Lab Coordinator to properly collect, log, and manage all hazardous waste for quarterly disposal. Removes accumulated hazardous waste from the laboratories upon completion of the experiment. Coordinates the removal of biological waste regularly.
Instrument Maintenance:
Keeps biology instruments and accessories in working order through routine checks. Reports of major malfunctions to the Laboratory Manager and coordinates repair or replacement. Organizes routine maintenance of microscopes and pipets
Greenhouse, Aquaria, and animal care:
Acquires Greenhouse materials as needed by Greenhouse personnel.
Obtains Animal Facility and aquaria supplies, as needed.
Coordinates the usage of the Animal Facility with the Animal Facility director and Eaton Hall Lab Manager. Obtains animals in accordance to the policies of the IACUC.
Hiring and Training TAs and Preppers:
Assists the Eaton Hall Laboratory Manager in hiring TAs and Preppers for assigned courses by recommendation of the faculty. Prepares a quarterly schedule of TAs and Preppers. Provides training for TAs and Preppers. Monitors TAs in the lab to ensure safety is being emphasized and safe procedures are taught, followed, and enforced.
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science, Biology.
Experience in Microbiology and Molecular Biology laboratory science through education or work experience.
Must be able to lift and carry 40 - 60 pounds.
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Word and Excel.
Will use high speed centrifuges, microscopes, autoclave, growth chamber, shaking incubator, pH meter, balance, Spectronic 20.
Additional Information:
Position will remain open until filled.
This position is full time for 10 months and then half time for 2 months in the summer.
Salary: $19.93 - $21.50 per hour, DOE
