The Department of Geography at Trinity College, the University of Dublin is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for two years to apply a novel numerical modelling approach to develop a national restoration framework for Irish peatlands. Identifying the most cost-effective land management and restoration approaches at a national scale to support carbon storage within organic rich soils, the post holder will work to identifying ecosystems which may be more easily prevented from tipping into new states under future climates or can recover from past disturbance with achievable restoration measures. Working between Trinity College Dublin, University of Birmingham (UK) and VU Amsterdam (Netherlands), the post holder will be supported to develop an excellent understanding of a pre-existing mechanistic models to examine the resilience of peatlands at a landscape scale ( doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2101742118
). They will refine the model to meet specific disturbance and restoration measures of Irish peatland and forestland ecosystems; working to building strong networks with ongoing researchers within the field of Irish peatland ecohydrology. The post holder will apply this modelling approach to assess the stability of peatlands across Ireland under current and future climatic conditions. They will undertake a cost-benefit analysis at a landscape scale to target restoration activities to those that maximise carbon storage gain per defined restoration investment. The post holder will disseminate research findings through a range of different routes, through the publication of high impact research papers, in addition to policy briefings and reclamation guidelines.
