Qualifications:
Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educator's Licensure is required, (SPED, ESL or ELL Licensure Preferred).
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and members of the community
Thorough intermediate to advanced knowledge of vocal pedagogy associated with effective instruction
Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
Commitment to changing lives through music education
Kodaly pedagogical experience preferred
Responsibility:
As per the Somerville Educators/Teachers Association, Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
Planning, implementation, and assessment of instruction (aligned to Somerville’s Learning Objectives and Curriculum) for chorus students in grades nine through twelve.
Recruitment and retention of students
Publicity and promotion of public performances
Student motivation, conduct and discipline
Maintaining alumni relationships
Choral participation in district and state auditions associated with MMEA Eastern DIstrict
Coordination, communication and collaboration with music department colleagues
Coordination with our Berklee Prepatory and City Programs
Assist interested students with preparations for solo/ensemble and/or college auditions
Instructs and plans High School Choral program to include:
a) Rehearsals for annual performances (Winter/Spring Concerts, An Evening of Song)
b) One yearly adjudication
c) One bi-annual high school field trip (overnight with cultural experience and performance component)
d) Other civic duties to include: Mayoral Inauguration or other events
e) Trips to elementary schools for performances and recruitment
f) Annual Somerville Christmas Tree Lighting
g) Performances at Class Day and High School Graduation
h) Other performances deemed appropriate by administration
i) Ordering, maintenance and storage of chorus uniforms
j) Collaboration with All City Middle School program
k) Creation of mentorship opportunities for High School Students
Maintenance of Chorus Music Library
Maintains a clean and orderly chorus room and storage room
Teach Introduction and Advanced Piano Classes
Teach a Music Technology Class
Complies with and supports all District regulations and policies
Develops a Chorus-Parent booster organization
Contributes to building newsletters
Communicates quarterly with chorus parents via a newsletter
Sets up and maintains a professional website
