Assistant Professor (Literature and History) (80411-0222)
£42,149 - £50,296 per annum
Permanent position, 36.5 hours per week.
The Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. intends to appoint an Assistant Professor in Literature and History to convene and teach on our joint honours English and History degree. The appointment will commence on 1 September 2022.
We seek an outstanding scholar who specialises in reading literature and culture as historically embedded – socially and materially – across any culture or historical period. The successful candidate will convene and teach on the English and History BA degree alongside colleagues in History. The candidate will engage with the intersection of literature and history at the level of theory in both their research and teaching. We are particularly interested in applicants specialising in comparative literary studies (including indigenous, African, Arabic, Asian, and Caribbean literatures), Trans Studies, Book History, and Animal Studies, but we welcome all applicants whose work focuses on the relationship between literatures and histories.
You will possess a PhD or equivalent; will have an emergent or already established international reputation in an appropriate field of study; and will have relevant teaching experience. You will also demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence and will join a teaching team with strengths in innovative teaching methods, including open-space learning and practical workshops, as well as more traditional lectures and seminars. Alongside core modules on the English and History degree, you will develop new research-led modules at BA and MA level; and will supervise PhD research. You will join a vibrant culture and research environment, in the Department and the Arts Faculty, and will foster research connections and collaborations with colleagues, especially those in the Department of History.
The department values diversity, challenges discrimination, and promotes equality. We are committed to strengthening our equality and diversity agenda both in relation to our community (students and staff), our teaching, research, and our curricula. Applications are encouraged from underrepresented groups, including people who identify as Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic, women, members of the LGBTQIUA communities, people with disabilities, and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We also strongly encourage those who have studied or worked at post-92 institutions.
Interview Date: 7 June 2022.
Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will give presentations and be interviewed on 7 June 2022. Presentations and interviews will be in person unless circumstances warrant otherwise. Long-listed candidates will be asked to send a writing sample of 6000-8000 words. For informal inquiries about the post, please contact Professor Paul Botley (****).
Closing date: 3 April 2022
