Job Goal:
The Supervisor of Art is responsible to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Instruction and Assessment, and supervises teachers of art. The supervisor goal is to provide each student in the district with varied opportunities to learn about and enjoy art experiences as a practitioner and/or as an appreciator.

Qualifications:
Hold, or working towards, a Massachusetts Administrator’s License (Principal or other license as appropriate) required;
Experience with supervision/evaluation of teachers;
Minimum of 5 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher; minimum of three years leadership experience in a program development and/or management role
Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate people.
Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Extremely organized, very strong administrative skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and set and meet deadlines.
Interest in working in a diverse workplace with a multicultural student body.
Responsibilities:
Assumes a limited teaching schedule.
Makes classroom visitations and prepares written evaluative reports of observations to the principals.
Takes the initiative in doing the necessary research to determine the needs for modification and updating the total program for all areas of the department.
Advises on the specifications of art equipment and supplies.
Confers with art teachers on the condition of ceramic kilns, easels, and other permanent property pertinent to the program and provides for the necessary repairs, maintenance or replacement.
Supervises all district-wide art exhibitions.
Serves as consultant in art to staff members involved in dramatics and other activities requiring artistic expressions.
Recommends participation of pupils in art contests.
Serves as curriculum resource person in the field.
Leads the teachers of the department in the development and continuous improvement of the program offered by the department.
Provides for the continuing review and improvement of existing curricula and the preparation of new curricula where needed.
Ensures that the department is constantly apprised of research findings, field experiments and other school program services which augment the teaching and learning effort.
Promotes the continuous evaluation of the department's program in terms of its established purpose and goals.
Conducts periodic meetings with departmental teachers to discuss and plan courses of study, methods of instruction, and to provide assistance to those teachers in other matters affecting pupil progress.
Plans and conducts in-service education for program personnel and other staff members.
Aids in the coordination and integration of the department's activities and offerings with those of other areas of the educational program.
Assists in recruitment, screening, hiring, training, and assigning department personnel.
Orients new teachers to departmental policy and all other necessary details for the proper indoctrination of a new person within the department.
Supervises substitutes and student teachers assigned to the department.
Encourages teachers to seek further study and professional growth.
Prepares and administers the department budget.
Assumes responsibility for the ordering, inventorying, and distributing of all departmental instructional materials.
Maintains complete and accurate records of the program and prepares necessary district, state, and federal reports.
Interprets program to staff, school committee, and general public.
Plans suitable publicity for program.
Attends relevant school, district, and professional meetings as necessary.
Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as administration may from time to time assign.
