Position Summary

Working closely with and reporting to the Chief of Police, the Public Information Officer is responsible for management and oversight of public affairs and communications development, community relations, project management, and advising.
The following represent the responsibilities of the Public Information Officer:
General Communications, Communications Strategy Produce timely and informative communications, including campus notices and press releases
Create media and community awareness about news stories to members of the media about the University Police Department's programs, initiatives, and activities
Write articles about University Police Department activities and initiatives for university channels, including NewsCenter
Develops and leads communications plans
Write press releases and statements, arrange for media interviews and press events
Manage the department's website content, email communications, and social media accounts
Respond to requests for information from university community members, general community members, and members of the media
Oversee campus safety messages and other notices working in close collaboration with Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StatComm)
Emergency Communications, Coordination and Response
Communicate critical public safety information to both internal and external stakeholders, including the development of Clery-required safety messages and emergency preparedness
Community Support and Coordination
Represent University Police Department in campus and community meetings
Provide media training and consultation to department officers
Liaise as necessary with university divisions and units, including s (StratComm and Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, and other agency departments and units
Build and maintain professional affiliations
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Marketing, and/or Communications or similar field
Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in public relations or journalism
Experience working in a large, complex organization such as higher education, public agency, or law enforcement environment
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in related field
Experience working within the California State University System
Experience with law enforcement administration, policies, practices, and procedures
Experience utilizing multi-media or digital software
Experience working with senior-level management
Experience leading or supervising staff

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated. The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
