I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Director of Financial Aid for GW's Law School exercises overall administrative responsibility for providing leadership and vision for the programs, services, and activities related to student attainment of their educational goals through financial resources and information. The Director is the Law School's administrator of federal, state and private/institutional financial aid programs and works closely and collaboratively with other administrators, faculty and staff to articulate School policy as well as federal and state regulations that govern financial aid awarding. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at the Law School and has the following responsibilities:
* Manages and supervises all federal, state, private and institutional financial aid processed through the School's Financial Aid Office, serving approximately 1,700 who receive some form of financial aid totaling approximately $80 million. Provides overall direction for interpretation and implementation of federal, state, and institutional policies, and ensures that internal processing procedures are developed to meet regulatory guidelines and requirements.
* Develops, in consultation with the Associate Dean, annual awarding strategies, ensuring financial aid awards are packaged and communicated to accepted and returning students in a timely manner. Analyzes responses to packaging strategies and adjusts as appropriate to assist in meeting enrollment goals.
* Responsible for the development, revision, implementation, and interpretation of financial aid policies, procedures, and practices that support the Office and the School, and remain in compliance with relevant laws, regulations and guidelines, as well as donor rules and restrictions.
* Oversees the services provided to students in understanding the financial aid process and to provide related guidance; communicates and discusses financial aid awards with current and prospective students and their parents. Reviews financial aid appeals and applies any manual adjustments in a consistent manner; serves as the sole administrator at the Law School for approving and issuing emergency loans, and reviews individual situations requiring special consideration, offering guidance along the way.
* Provides the Associate Dean with current statistics using institutional data and resources to review and analyze financial aid data for reporting purposes and to identify areas of need and/or trends. Responsible for developing Cost of Attendance (
COA
) as well as protocol for dependency overrides and budget increases; works with the Career Office and faculty regarding loan forgiveness and repayment programs; ensures that all scholarships are assigned to correct endowments and meets the conditions in the Memorandum of Understanding (
MOU
); ensures compliance with Satisfactory Academic Progress (
SAP
); and ensures and tuition remissions benefits are applied correctly and refunds/charges are accurately posted.
* Responsible for maintaining the Law School's portion of the Banner Financial Aid Module; updating each aid year before processing begins; updating/creating new rules and reports to ensure accurate and efficient processing; creating new funds when necessary; collaborating with the University Financial Aid Technical staff to resolve any issues.
* Serves as a liaison to other university offices and governmental agencies in providing financial aid information, ensuring all required reporting and communications is completed in a timely manner; provides documentation for audit purposes.
* Participates in institutional committees and meetings as appropriate, and represents the School at national and regional professional organizations.
* Provides oversight and direction for the recruitment, interviewing, selection, counseling, training, supervision and evaluation of office staff. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge of extensive financial aid policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements for federal, state, and university programs which directs the awarding of funds to students for financial aid needs.
Knowledge of Banner Financial Aid system and related module components and developing/implementing new strategies and procedures.
Ability to pull and analyze data from Banner.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
