Applications are invited for a PhD studentship at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. in collaboration with Johnson Matthey plc. Hydrogen-fuelled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a vital technology in enabling the transition to net-zero carbon energy. However, a key issue severely impacting the performance and efficiency of PEMFCs is water flooding. Water flooding occurs in the cathode-side catalyst layer whereby water generated in the cathode reaction partially fills the pores of the catalyst layer thereby blocking access for in-coming oxygen. It has been found however, that current characterisation methods used are unable to distinguish sufficiently between the chemical and physical characteristics of different layers, so as to predict differences in their eventual PEMFC performance and to enable the design of new, better layers. Hence, new characterisation techniques are needed, and their development is the aim of this project. This project will develop new characterisation techniques for PEMFC cathode catalysts employing hyperpolarised gas-phase NMR/MRI, developed at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, UoN, and adsorption techniques including calorimetry at the UoN School of Engineering.
The collaboration with Johnson Matthey (JM) will enable the student to gain in-depth experience of new product research and development in industry. JM has a significant and rapidly growing business in the supply of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to fuel cell stack and system manufacturers. The company has recently adjusted its focus to concentrate on the growth of the fuel cell and green hydrogen (electrolysis) and other hydrogen generation and climate change mitigation technologies.
On successful application, the studentship would be fully funded for 3 years and cover UK-rate tuition fees and a stipend of at least the UK Research & Innovation recommended levels for each year of study.
