What You Will Do:
General Summary
The Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services is a key executive leader at the University of Maryland Medical Center accountable for nursing practice, nursing quality and performance improvement, strategic planning, policy formulation, nursing operations, program development, Magnet designation, regulatory compliance and the patient experience. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center is accountable for nursing practice and service, as well as the practice and service of a variety of clinical patient care service line departments This role is directly accountable for expense management within their defined areas of authority.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the individual assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified. Provides leadership and oversight to all areas of accountability which may include but not be limited to Surgery, Cardiac Services, Cardiology, Neurosciences, Women's and Children's, Psychiatry, Oncology, Medicine and Emergency Services.
1. Creates an environment conducive to a world-class and exemplar professional nursing organization that achieves a competitive advantage for this academic medical center.
2. Establishes a vision and culture of excellence that leads to seamless patient care delivery and excellent nursing practice at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Serves as a leading change agent for cooperation and collaboration.
3. Establishes and sustains a leadership team and structure that is effective across disciplines and the full continuum of care. Develops and implement an appropriate succession plan for respective nursing leaders.
4. Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Clinical Officer, Chief Operating Officer and the Chief Medical Officer to support and provide leadership for a interprofessional quality management and performance improvement program that contributes to a highly reliable organization, enhances clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, employee engagement and safety. (Vizient, CMS, HSCRC, Leapfrog...)
5. Serves as an excellent communicator utilizing inclusive strategies across the organization that embraces the feedback of all stakeholders and advances the strategic priorities of the University of Maryland Medical Center and System.
6.Creates and sustains a professional practice environment engaging staff in advancing nursing practice, shared governance and patient outcomes.
7. Collaborates with key physician leaders, internal and external stakeholders that impact the vision and mission of nursing and patient care services.
8. Establishes partnerships with the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Nursing to develop, identify, and support mutual programs of interest. In addition, establishes other partnerships with Schools of Nursing to expand the breadth and scope of the influence of nursing at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
9. Establishes effective working relationships and builds credibility within UMMC to support just culture and patient safety.
10. Leads initiatives that result in Magnet redesignation and compliance with regulatory bodies.
11. Provides the ongoing evaluation of nursing care resource planning and utilization.
12. Collaborates with Human Resources, Talent Acquisition and Organizational Development, to create a workforce plan that is responsive he growing clinical demands of the organization.
13. Creates an innovative environment that embraces inquiry, evidence based practice, technology and performance improvement that directly impacts nursing and patient outcomes (retention, recruitment, engagement, nursing sensitive indicators and the patient experience).
14. Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, system, department and unit patient safety initiatives.
Actively promotes safety for patients and employees in a variety of forums.
Takes action to correct observed risks to patient and employee safety.
Participates in quality of care reviews, root cause analyses and implements associated safety plans that address root causes of safety events.
Implements and evaluates policies, procedures, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
Identifies and mitigates possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to appropriate colleagues for resolution.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing is required.
Master's Degree in Nursing or healthcare field is required.
Doctoral Degree in Nursing or healthcare field is preferred.
A Maryland nursing license or eligibility to apply for a Maryland nursing license.
7 years of progressive management experience.
Experience working in a health care system.
Strong public speaking, presentation and writing skills.
Strong conceptual nursing base with expertise in strategic planning, professional practice models, systems thinking and quality improvement processes.
Strong track record of establishing internal and external relationships which facilitate and enhance the image of nursing and patient care practice at the local, regional and national level.
Working Conditions
1. While primarily working Monday through Friday, weekend, evening/night shift, holiday may be required.
2. The role is on-call 24/7 except when signed off to another leader who covers during an absence.
3. Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment.
