We believe and desire to submit to and follow Christ Jesus and all that the perfect and inerrant Word of God teaches. This includes a Biblical understanding of complementarian roles, Biblical marriage, sexuality & gender, sanctity of life, family, parenting, plurality of Biblical elders, Biblical counseling (as opposed to Christian counseling), Biblical justice (as opposed to social justice/CRT), and all of life gospel. We are charitably reformed, preach expositorily, and practice believer’s baptism. We desire to be light and salt in a dark and decaying generation, a kingdom outpost from which to serve and grow in truth and love for such a time as this. ABOUT
The Barn Church is a community of 70+ followers of Jesus Christ in Merced, CA: families, college students, young couples, and many young children. We submit to Scripture and seek to live it out in our life stations, utilizing the talents God has given us for use in His kingdom. We currently meet on Sunday afternoons (4pm) at a local church. Merced is a beautiful and broken city that desperately needs the Word of God proclaimed–both in word and deed!
PURPOSE
Function as a paid pastoral and shepherd elder to support God’s mission for The Barn Church with a focus on preaching, pastoral care, small group development, administration, biblical counseling, and the equipping and training in righteousness of all ages through the ministry of the Word. We desire a church that is not program driven in order to free up members to go forth and act as salt and light in the Merced community. We yearn to be strong on evangelism outside the church walls, while focusing on discipleship within. We envision a church that is an outpost for local missionaries to a godless culture.
QUALIFICATIONS
A personal and maturing walk with Jesus Christ.
Fulfills the character qualifications and duties for an elder as found in 1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, and 1 Peter 5.
Agrees with The Barn Church’s vision and beliefs. See Statement of Faith
Disciplined and organized with a strong work ethic. Winsome and relational. Gentle mannered yet strong in conviction.
Formal theological education is strongly preferred. Master’s level seminary education or equivalent is desired.
3-5 years of teaching pastor ministry experience is preferred, but not required.
Recognizes his role to be “the first among equals” with the elders of the church.
We know the man described does not exist. We each have different gifts and flaws which we hope as a plurality of elders we can grow more into as a team.
DESCRIPTION OF PASTOR
HUMBLE:
Truly a servant leader as described in Matthew 20:26-28. Believes in and submits to the mission and values of the leadership of the church. His greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the development of people he has invested in succeed and shine in their leadership roles.
VISIONARY/ENERGIZED:
There is nothing more rewarding to him than witnessing lives transformed through the Holy Spirit and the work of Jesus Christ. Desires to work hard for the kingdom and possesses a vision for the way God wants to do that here in Merced. Enthusiastic about his calling to pastoral ministry.
WISE & DISCERNING
Knows the Word of God and has the gift of teaching and exhortation. Possesses a mature self-awareness and his need to remain rooted in the vine.. He is not afraid to speak honestly and directly with others but does so from a place of gentleness and respect. Capable of connecting on a personal level with all his congregants and fellow leaders.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The pastor will directly oversee the pastoral care and administration of the church alongside the elders as a “first among equals”.
The pastor will also direct assimilation to welcome every person and help develop a process to move people from guest to fully functioning disciples of Christ
To assist the elder’s to direct The Barn Church’s mission.
We see the pastoral position growing and changing as The Barn Church grows. Need for vision and flexibility. We also want to leverage his unique giftings for the kingdom, recognizing that we are a body that will work together.
SCOPE OF WORK
Preach Regularly
Preach 3x month - primarily expository preaching rather than topical - through the Bible. Encourage elders to preach annually.
Able to name nuance and apply Scripture rightly. Articulate discerningly.
Support the Teaching Team process (Working on your sermon with the elders and receive feedback).
To articulate the gospel to a broad audience (children, youth, college, adults) w/out watering down the truth. Disarming yet bold, joyfully utilizing stories and Scripture to communicate and connect.
Vision & Implementation
To organize and hone the church vision alongside the elders. Cast vision and develop effective teams.
Work with the elders to execute the vision and strategy, along with the Church's core values.
Be ready to plan, build, develop, grow wherever God leads the elders.
Help to further develop and roll out the vision of The Barn Church to be a faithful church in the Kingdom of God.
Pastoral Responsibilities
Build relationships and connect with the church body, and shepherd faithfully.
Lead in the pastoral care of the church - perform weddings, memorials, and baptisms.
Help provide leadership development directly and through resources/training that assist volunteers and future staff in fulfilling their ministry roles.
Empower families to be ground zero for spiritual growth and local ministry.
Work with elders to establish good church discipline and provide some biblical counseling as needed.
Executive Responsibilities
Manage or oversee the delegation of the legal administration, and day-to-day affairs, of the church.
Help elders establish healthy and biblical church polity.
Work with elders to coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of all ministries.
Help oversee the website and communications team (social media/e-mails/bulletin, etc) to ensure that all forms of connection are engaging, clear, and effective.
Meet regularly with volunteers and future staff teams for reporting, planning, and evaluation.
Willingness to connect with local churches in the central valley that are like-minded to form a loose network of support.
COMPENSATION
This is a part-time or full-time position. If part-time, the expectation would be to soon develop into full time. Competitive salary. Specific Benefits will be provided throughout the interview process. $80k - full-time equivalent package pending experience and qualifications. Salary to grow over time as appropriate.
