Position Summary
The Shah Lab at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., is hiring a post-doctoral research associate for research involving thermal physiology and species interactions in aquatic communities. The project will involve unraveling the effects of temperature on the growth, development, energy allocation, and stress responses of damselfly nymphs from two naturally occurring communities that are controlled by different aquatic predators. It will also involve testing thermal physiological traits of the predators. The candidate will apply their knowledge (or rapidly develop skills in) ectotherm physiology, metabolic rate measurements, data analysis, and modeling to intellectually important questions in ecological physiology. This position includes working with PI Shah’s network of collaborators as well as opportunities to contribute to mentoring undergraduate (through the summer NSF REU program) and graduate students. Outreach opportunities will be available, and the candidate is encouraged to engage with them. There will be capacity for research on self-initiated side projects relevant to aquatic insect thermal physiology. Salary will range from $50,000 to $52,000 (USD) and will be commensurate with experience (i.e., years since finishing PhD). The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to apply for additional years of funding through the National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship program, the MSU EEB Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship, or another equivalent program. Collectively, this postdoctoral experience will leave the successful candidate well-placed to continue in academia or other areas of STEM work.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated critical thinking, written and oral communication, time management, and organizational skills. They will have demonstrated skills in analyzing and interpreting data, presenting their work to a professional audience, and a demonstrated record of seeing projects through to completion. They will understand the scientific publishing process and have demonstrated expertise in conceiving and designing thoughtful experiments
. They will be driven to succeed, excited about science, willing to give and receive critical, constructive feedback, and be committed to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness. The ideal candidate will have insect physiology and community ecology experience, or a background in physiology, entomology, or functional ecology and a strong desire to continue developing these skills. They will have a demonstrably solid understanding of R statistical programming and ideally, ecological modeling experience. Applicants should note that this research will involve seasonal fieldwork around deep waterbodies, use of boats, walking in tall grass potentially containing ticks, and working in hot and humid conditions.
The successful candidate will take a leadership role in the Shah lab, contributing to, and benefiting from, the lab and KBS’s exceptional training environment. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to present their data at a conference and be expected to lead scientific publications.
The W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) is **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s largest off-campus education complex, and is located south of Hickory Corners, MI (about 65 miles (105 km) from the main MSU campus). KBS houses 12 year-round faculty members with expertise in evolutionary biology, ecology, physiology, disease ecology, and agricultural sciences. Several additional faculty members are associated with KBS but are housed on the MSU main campus. The grounds around KBS include natural forest, agricultural plots, wetlands, ponds, and lakes. In-house facilities include a state-of-the-art temperature-controlled facility, a Pond Lab that includes semi-natural ponds and pond mesocosms, a genomics core facility, and plenty of lab space.
