, is a small innovation high school and, is seeking high-energy, insightful educators dedicated to creating rigorous and authentic learning experiences for students. Teachers at Horizons are also called advisors and while certified in a subject area at the high school level, you will coach students in all areas of learning. In your role as advisor you are a teacher, a project manager, an academic counselor and an emotional and social support person; you will work with a group of students to identify their interests and passions, help them find internship opportunities in those areas, and build their learning around those experiences. Responsibilities include
Plan an individualized program of instruction that is both challenging and that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each student, centered around authentic, project-based learning experiences
Articulate each student’s progress, educationally and socially, through marking period narratives, phone calls and meetings with parents, and weekly student meetings
Facilitate the creation of and monitor meaningful internships using phone calls, shadow days, information interviews, site visits, and other available means
Establish clear objectives for each student and employ a variety of educational techniques in pursuit of rigorous, integrated academic experiences and habits of work
Collaborate with a group of passionate educators in creating and nurturing a school that meets the needs of students looking for or needing a more individualized program
Build strong relationships within the school community and support restorative justice practices
Maintain patience and a sense of humor, and celebrate the successes
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
: Horizons Alternative High School believes that schools must be personalized; educating every student equally, one student at a time. Each student’s learning plan should grow out of his or her unique needs, interests and passions. Teachers are advisors and they are an integral part of the environment that allows students the freedom to find themselves with the support and motivation of inspiring adults.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach students how to learn and gather and filter information through personal interaction, print and web-based sources
Plan a program of instruction that is both challenging and meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of each student
Guide students into learning experiences and activities that focus on the mastery of the specific content area as it relates to state standards
Provide supplemental and education resources in order to support the students’ growth
Employ a variety of educational techniques in pursuit of educational goals and establish clear objectives for student growth
Facilitate learning outside of the school building through field trips and leadership excursions
Hold students accountable to specific grade, advisory and campus standards and celebrate students’ accomplishments
Assert students’ educational and social progress through quarterly narratives, phone calls to parents and weekly student meetings
Maintain accurate, complete and factual student transcripts as required by the school and state law
Be accessible to students and parents/guardians for education-related purposes
Actively engage parent/guardians and family members in the life and learning of their children
Assist students in applying to colleges, complete college coursework, vocational training or internship while at the Horizons
Incorporate formal Learning Plans and Learning Through Internship experiences in the learning journey

Instructional Strategies
Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans, class activities, and a variety of instructional materials that facilitate active and meaningful learning. Develop lesson plans and tests that are in accordance with established expectations.
In harmony with the parameters of the District-adopted curriculum, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc, and communicate these objectives and their purpose to students.
Adapt and reassess lesson plans to meet specific student needs; comply with newly implemented guidelines or rules, and update lesson plans and activities to incorporate best practices and new developments in education.
Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
Assess and record learning on an ongoing basis and adjust instruction based on the assessments.
Refer students with special learning needs to appropriate staff according to district/building/department procedures.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
Assist students in attaining an acceptable level of proficiency in related computer work.
Collaborate with colleagues and participate in EST (education study team) and Special Educators to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the student population being served and how demographic variables impact student achievement, and effectively use this knowledge to effectively design and deliver instruction.
Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
Provide a safe, positive learning environment for students by effectively managing student behavior, and monitoring students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, cafeteria, playground, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.). Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and consistently enforcing rules and procedures. Maintain classroom discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
Possess and continually develop a working knowledge of state and District curriculum standards and frameworks.
Participate in scheduled in-service days and staff meetings.
Cooperate with and support other faculty and staff in planning instruction and coordinating services for students.
Use discretion in discussing school affairs, recognizing the value of positive school-community relations.
Strive to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education, goals, and instructional objectives.
Comply with Board and administrative policies, regulations, and procedures and reinforce students’ doing the same.
Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, district policies, and school regulations.
Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, bullying, hazing, zero-tolerance offenses, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state law and board policies.
Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
Attendance in accordance with established days/hours of work.
Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree.
Certification: Licensed or eligible for Vermont Educators License.
Endorsements in high school History, Social Studies or related humanities area, or eligible for Vermont Provisional License.
Documented or eligible for NCLB Highly Qualified Teacher status as applicable.
Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Experience:
Minimum Required: Demonstrated experience in teaching at the high school level.
Demonstrated experience in teaching
courses in a variety of subject areas related to history and social studies.
Demonstrated experience in differentiating instruction and planning curriculum aligned with Common Core standards/instruction using “backwards design,” formative assessment, and universal design for learning. .
Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into instruction.
Understanding of Cultural Competency (as explained through Essay 1 on SchoolSpring).
Knowledge of best practices regarding frameworks of student behavioral support.
