Reporting directly to the Dean of the college, the Communication Specialist will provide leadership and expertise in developing and executing strategies and initiatives for college-wide communications to deliver timely information, provide service and build relationships with key audiences. Under the general direction of the Dean, the communications specialist will develop, implement and maintain a strategic communications and marketing plan for the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), which includes (but is not limited to):
A brand-aligned messaging platform across nine departments and oversight of the college's communications and information flow, including a) the development and creation of content, b) the production of printed and electronic materials which cultivate interest, involvement and support of the college's current and prospective constituents through the website, social media, collateral, events and direct mail;
Promotion of the college's vision, programs and fundraising priorities and objectives to reach the college's audiences of students, alumni, industry partners, donors, parents, relevant media, employers, faculty/staff, volunteers and friends.
Communications coordination for the college's departments and collaboration with colleagues and units throughout the university to advance the college's brand, values and reputation.
This position will also report into Cal Poly's central University Communications and Marketing (UCM) division, working in partnership with the UCM team to ensure strategic communications and marketing plans are aligned with the university's goals.
Department Summary
The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) contains seven departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Kinesiology and Public Health, Liberal Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, as well as the School of Education. CSM also contains five centers: Center for Applications in Biotechnology (CAB), Center for Coastal Marine Science (CCMS), Center for Health Research (CHR), and the Center for Engineering, Science and Math Education (CESAME) and Western Coatings Technology Center (WCTC). In addition, the college has an advancement team, student services team, and credential team. The college employs approximately 375 full- and part-time faculty, 42 teaching associates, and 70 staff and administrative employees.
Key Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in the development of strategic communications and messaging.
Demonstrated ability to research and identify communication needs and target audiences.
Strong writing and speaking skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner to multiple audiences using multiple modalities.
Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver messages; ability to interview, research and write compelling stories for web and print publication.
Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats and ability to effectively use web technology, including social media, to achieve communication goals.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university and three years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and public relations, or a related field. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Salary and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,000 - $66,000 annually
Classification Range: $42,180 - $76,296 annually
