Assistant Director, Student Success Center
We are seeking an
Assistant Director of the Student Success Center
(SSC) who is responsible for strategically leading the centers (Baltimore & DC) in meeting the needs of a 4,000 diverse student body including domestic, international, full and part-time, in-person and online. The Assistant Director will collaborate with a wide range of academic and student affairs staff as well as faculty to determine student needs, envision programming, implementing and evaluating student success initiatives. The oversight of all SSC initiatives directly supports the goal of the school to retain, educate and graduate students in a timely manner. This position is key to student academic success.
The Assistant Director will report to the Sr. Associate Director for Academic Enrichment and will directly hire, train, and supervise 10-15 tutors. Key areas of responsibilities include: 1) management of people, projects, and platforms; 2) operational management including maintaining tutoring appointment system, staffing appropriately and within budget; 3) strategic planning, design, implementation and evaluation of academic support services; 4) curriculum design, training, management and evaluation of all tutors; 5) campus outreach to establish and utilize collaborative partnerships.
Occasional travel to DC is expected.
Position is currently categorized as hybrid 2-3-days a week on campus.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
Recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate approximately10-15 tutors. Conduct tutor meetings on a regular basis. Ensures ongoing development to support high-quality services delivery; promotes best practices in field. Ensure frequent, clear and motivating communication and coordination of office targets, activities, decisions and results.
Teach Instructional Foundations and Strategies for Tutors.
Align and advocate for resources to meet priorities.
Manages CRLA certification credentials for the center and the tutors.
Work collaborative with other departments such as IT, Office of Faculty and Research, Academic Programs, Career Development Office, and Academic Advising to market services, discuss opportunities and challenges, and ultimately make decisions on needed changes, updates, addition or deletion of programming, platforms, tools, strategies, and engagement.
Serve as the liaison to LinkedIn Learning, work to establish greater collaboration amongst academic programs and offerings, monitor engagement, and build the portfolio that is curated for students. Promote platform and value of engagement from Admissions through graduation.
Planning & Assessment
Create a comprehensive menu and schedule of academic support services to meet specific student needs each semester based on course offerings to include but not limited to in-person and virtual: one-on-one tutoring, group sessions, and workshops.
Coordinate skills-based workshops during Orientation and Continuous Onboarding that are offered to all students.
Determine additional needs for support to include workshops based on needs. Create and teach sessions and workshops or recommend plan to address student needs with outside presenters or programs (i.e. LinkedIn Learning)
Plan and execute an optimal schedule of business hours to accommodate a diverse student body to include full-time in-person students, part-time in person students, flex and online students, international and domestic students.
Provide leadership and implement the development and implementation of assessment strategies to collect, manage and report data related to the academic success, retention and satisfaction of students.
Coordinate a comprehensive evaluation of all SSC activities to support student success; create and administer assessments for evaluation.
Analyze data, identify trends and develop reports based upon contact and assessment data. Make recommendations for future action.
Periodically initiate and execute benchmarking and industry standards reviews for evaluation/improvement purposes.
Keep abreast of national trends in higher education and remain current in the field of retention and student success. Benchmark other tutoring centers and academic offerings at grad schools and graduate business schools.
Evaluate SSC platforms (currently Tutortrac) and make recommendations as needed and in response to user feedback.
Develop, deliver presentations, and promote the SSC to new and current students by participating in orientations, resource fairs, and other events.
Campus Outreach/Collaborative Partnerships
Collaborate with faculty, staff and students to develop programs, services or opportunities to support the academic success and retention of students.
Collaborate with the Program Directors and Managers to enhance the academic success and retention of students.
Participate in school meetings to stay current on student needs and collaboratively design new or updated programming to meet the diverse and changing needs of students.
Actively participate in Orientation and Continuous Onboarding by creating and/or facilitating sessions.
Strengthen ties with other JHU tutoring centers.
Support Academic Enrichment programs
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree.
Minimum of 1 year of successful managerial/administrative/operations experience.
Certified tutor trainer or equivalent teacher training experience.
Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree Strongly preferred.
Minimum of two-three years of experience in post-secondary teaching/tutoring with experience in ESL and/or business curriculum, working with international students and adults.
Experience developing, articulating, operationalizing, and assessing strategic priorities.
Budget experience preferred.
Demonstrated Intercultural Competence preferred.
