Job purpose and duties:
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. invites applications for the position of Technical Research Officer in Hybrid Manufacturing Processes within the Smart Factory Hub (SmartFub) project funded through a European Structural Investment Fund (ESIF). Post-holder will support the established, industrially relevant technology demonstrators, driving commercial adoption of digital technologies to enable high-value sustainable manufacturing, new product development via a range of technology transfer channels/ collaborations (e.g. feasibility studies and industry-focused R&D projects) within SmartFub.
Primarily based in the Schools of Engineering and Materials and Metallurgy Engineering at Birmingham, post-holder is expected to work on other locations periodically. Role will involve collaboration with SMEs in Greater Birmingham and Solihull (GBS), Coventry & Warwickshire (C&W), Black Country (BC) and Stoke & Staffordshire (S&S) Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas. Hence, ability to interact with external commercial organisations is a prerequisite for this position. The main duties are:
Conduct technology audits, scoping studies and demonstration projects on hybrid manufacturing solutions for specific industry requirements.
Design, implement, validate hybrid manufacturing solutions, integrating additive manufacturing with complementary material processing technologies. 
Skills/Experience:
Working with the Business Engagement Manager, Project Manager and Academic Theme Leaders in the delivery of business assists/ knowledge transfer activities:
High level of competence, process setting up/ experience in hybrid additive-subtractive solutions, including additive manufacturing, subtractive. laser ablation technology (metal and ceramic).
Numerical modelling, both Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Fluency in relevant techniques and ability to developing new ones.
Good experience in CAD/CAM generating G-codes and very good experience with different surface characterization approaches for process optimization and metrology.
Very good experience in material characterisation techniques: SEM, EDX, XRD, optical microscopy and rheology.
High level of competence in planning and conducting complex empirical studies.
Good client relationship management and interpersonal skills; an ability to work closely with other people at all levels, both within and outside the University.
Ability to plan, manage and prioritise own workload, respond to changing priorities, assess resource requirements and use resources effectively. Deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining a consistently high standard of service and meeting client need; teamwork, communication, work ethic, and self-motivated.
Identifying new manufacturing/ automation methods and techniques arising from their work or that of co-workers which may provide sources of new intellectual property.
Providing appropriate training to SmartFub beneficiaries to enable them to implement the digital manufacturing, techniques and methodologies developed by the project. 
Qualifications/Experience
To hold relevant first degree or Master (MSc) in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering or related disciplines or equivalent experience.
To hold PhD or EngD in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering or related disciplines.
Post graduate practitioner experience in additive, laser and hybrid manufacturing processes, inspection, characterisation methods, CAD/CAM and process modelling.
Experience of supervision and management of research students and projects.
