The Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences (S.C.A.L.E.) is now accepting applications for the position of part-time ELL Evening Teacher – Level 1. Classes are held at our current location, 167 Holland Street, Somerville, MA 02144.
Schedule
Part Time: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. ·
6 teaching hours and 1.5 preparation hours per week·
Monthly meetings, 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.·
Teaching responsibilities begin in September (upon completion of the hiring process) and continue through June 30, 2023. (Please note that the actual end date will be determined after snow days and other cancellations.)
General Description:
The Part-time ELL Level 4 teacher is responsible for preparing engaging, active, learner-centered lessons for adult immigrant students at intermediate to advanced levels of English proficiency. Instruction focuses on English reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and grammar according to the curricular guidelines of the program. Technology is integrated to enhance instruction and to strengthen students’ digital literacy in preparation for college and/or workplace demands. Teachers follow the SCALE ELL curriculum to provide a rigorous and meaningful educational experience to meet program objectives and student goals.
Responsibilities Include:
Plan and deliver high-quality lessons that align with the ELL Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and the MA DESE English Language Proficiency Standards. ( submit one lesson plan per month
Attend and participate in department meetings, appropriate in-service workshops, and take advantage of professional development opportunities for continued improvement in ELL instruction and teaching strategies.
Implement useful diagnostic and progress assessment measures to evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
Complete attendance and assessment-related activities in compliance with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s) and program administrators for program effectiveness and to ensure the development and growth of student knowledge and skills.
Follow department policy/procedures regarding the delivery of instruction, progress monitoring and placement, substitutes and substitute lesson plans, and operating procedures.
Integrate technology into instruction.
Qualifications:
Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Educator's license in the field or subject for this position – ESL a plus.
DESE SEI Endorsement Required
Bilingual Educator Preferred
BEST Plus and TABE-e Reading certification is preferred but not required for this position.
Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of teaching approaches for ESL
Ability to integrate technology to enhance instruction
