Position Summary
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for development, guidance, and implementation of environmental, occupational health, and fire/life safety programs aimed at protecting the campus community and to achieve and maintain compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes that govern these programs. This department reports to the Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs
Federal, State, and local regulations require various occupational safety programs.
Occupational safety programs include accident and injury prevention, ergonomics, fall protection, hazard assessment, hazardous energy, hot work, industrial truck safety, ladder safety, medical surveillance, personal protective equipment, confined space, electrical safety, excavation, trenching, and shoring, fire and life safety, heat illness prevention, and the injury and illness prevention program.
The Occupational Safety Specialist will implement occupational health and safety programs, OSHA compliance, learning management systems for campus wide safety training. The incumbent will conduct occupational safety inspections, safety equipment inspections, job hazard analysis, and ergonomic evaluations. The incumbent will work with facilities services, and other campus departments to develop targeted safety trainings.
The Occupational Safety Specialist will work with minimal supervision, assess program requirements and implement recommended changes, and have the ability to pay attention to detail.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a related discipline
3-5 years providing Occupational Safety related services in either public or private setting with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods.
Licenses Required
Valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.
Specialized Skills
Highly developed presentation skills, comfortable conducting training to diverse audiences
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to meet all requirements necessary to climb structures and oversee Fall Protection Program
Program administration experience in occupational safety disciplines and learning management systems
Working knowledge of Google Suite and Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related discipline
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) highly desired

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
Supplemental Information
