What You Will Do:
Head & Neck Oncology Nurse Navigator

Day Shift
Nurse Navigation Core Responsibilities:
Initiate contact with all new head and neck cancer patients. Works with the UMGCCC referral center and physicians/APPs across Otolaryngology, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology to direct new patients to the appropriate providers and clinics.
Regular attendance at Tumor Board and attending virtual tumor boards to coordinate care between neighboring centers to facilitate triage to adjuvant therapy services
Identify patients suitable for multi-disciplinary head and neck clinic to evaluate for clinical trial candidacy, change in treatment plan, second opinion of oncologic care, recurrence of head and neck cancer, and patients with physical limitations.
Provide nursing assessments and triage of patient care for new and recurrent head and neck cancer patients.
Work with Clinical Research teams in Cancer Center and Radiation Oncology to identify potential clinical trial candidates. Assist with providing patients with IRB approved trial information.
Screen patients for initial diagnosis, oncologic staging, and appropriateness of radiologic and pathologic testing.
Establish care with ancillary services for patient support during head and neck cancer treatment including speech and language pathology, nutritional support, and social work services.
Ensure proper medical screening and clearance prior to initiation of treatment. Coordination with medical physicians, speech and language pathology, audiology, and dental clearance.
Leverage local and national education (NCI, ASCO, NCCN, and AONN) materials to assists patients in understanding their diagnosis, treatment options and the resources available, including educating patients about clinical research studies. Follow patients throughout the care continuum to ensure progression of the plan of care involved, including re-engagement of appropriate teams in the event of cancer progression.
Facilitate development and distribution of survivorship care and surveillance plan for eligible head and neck cancer patients.
Engage with other nurse navigators and nursing leaders within the cancer center and radiation oncology, to adopt best practices related to screening, survivorship and surveillance of patients with head and neck cancer.
Work in partnership with the administrative director and head and neck cancer physician leadership to define, evaluate and implement quality measures and strategic goals for the program.
Train and guide other nursing and support staff engaged in clinical activities to support patient.
Offer family support as required, including applicable referral and palliative care refer.
Attendance and participation of at least one community screening or prevention event yearly
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of oncology treatment procedures, facilities, and equipment
Ability to educate patients on the nature of the disease and necessary referrals for coordination of care.
Patient assessment and referral skills
Knowledge of supportive and palliative care services
Ability to communicate with a diverse multidisciplinary team
What You Need to Be Successful:
Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.
BSN degree required.
Current CPR certification required.
Two years professional nursing experience required, ambulatory/outpatient experience preferred.
Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.
Maintenance of 15 contact hours of education every year or 30 contact hours of education every two years.
Member of a professional organization.
Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred, not required
