Job Title: Tooth Tutor

JOB GOAL:
The goal of the Tooth Tutor program is to link children in the Target Group (those children who have not accessed dental care in the previous year) with a local dental home for preventive, comprehensive and continuous dental care.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Registered Dental Hygienist
Current Vermont Dental Hygiene license
Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain order in a classroom and present health material to an audience of children, parents and staff
Sensitive to the unique barrier to dental care faced by children and families with varied cultural backgrounds, limited English language skills, and lack of financial resources
Proficient in computer applications – word processing; spreadsheets; email; internet
General familiarity with laws and regulations governing education in Vermont
Familiar with laws and regulations governing confidentiality in schools (FERPA) and health care facilities (HIPAA)
A high degree of professional rapport with other dental professionals
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable;
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Collaborate with the Vermont Department of Health’s Office of Oral Health, the Community Health Centers of Burlington and the schools in delivering needed services
Maintain a high level of confidentiality
Prepare paperwork and complete data entry for BSD and submission to VDH
Attendance in accordance with established days/hours of work
Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned
Specific Tooth Tutor Dental Access Program duties:
Develop a target group of children – those students with no dentist, no dental visit in the past year or no information. This information is obtained from school health histories in partnership with the school nurse.
Provide beginning and ending school data in the format required by VDH
Follow up with those families with letters, information, and phone calls.
Address barriers to making and keeping dental appointments.
Assist families to make dental appointments with their stated dentist or the Dental Clinic at IAA, including registrations.
Reinforce with parent whenever possible the importance of early dental care and the importance of keeping dental appointments.
Determine if and when child has had a dental appointment.
Provide classroom dental health education programs if there is nurse/teacher interest and time allows.
Knowledge of the Medicaid/Dr. Dynasaur programs, Medicaid transportation, current dental hygiene practice, and the basics of dental public health.
Attend the Annual Tooth Tutor Conference sponsored by the Vermont Department of Health
ESSENTIAL DUTIES – PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for at least part of each day;
Possess strength and stamina to be able to remain in a seated position for up to 90 minutes at a time throughout the workday;
Possess strength and stamina to be able to remain standing for a period of up to 90 minutes at a time throughout the workday;
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds;
Ability to carry up to 25 pounds;
Frequent walking, light lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching or other limited physical activities;
