PURPOSE
Under the general administrative direction of the Dean of University College, and the daily oversight of the Director of the Service Learning Institute (SLI), the Associate Director provides leadership for an innovative campus-wide academic program focused on service learning and social justice education. The Associate Director is responsible for developing and managing the campus-wide support systems for service learning at CSUMB, for managing the dissemination of information regarding CSUMB's service learning program, and for supporting research and evaluation to strengthen program effectiveness and create and sustain meaningful campus-community relations. The Associate Director provides direct supervision for SLI staff involved in building service learning community partnerships and coordinating the service learning placement process; oversees the implementation and build-out of the MySLP/S4 partnership database system; coordinates SLI training events; manages overall program evaluation and data-gathering processes; facilitates the production of the SLI's written and electronic materials; oversees the continuing development of the SLI's web-presence; and supports the SLI Director with overall institute leadership, strategic planning and external fund-raising. The Associate Director is the SLI's point person in developing and implementing procedures for managing risk in service learning and participates in campus-wide discussions with the Office of Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety. The Associate Director serves as the principal liaison with Student Affairs programs and offices that support co-curricular community service and other community engagement efforts. The Associate Director represents the SLI at CSU system-wide and national meetings and conferences related to the support for community and civic engagement; and supports research demonstrating SLI program impact and effectiveness. The Associate Director provides leadership for the SLI in the absence of the Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following
Leadership for Campus-Wide Service Learning Support Systems:
Provides overall direction and coordination of service learning support processes to ensure high quality service learning course and community partnership support that builds civic agency, practices collaboration, and is attentive to racial equity, power, and positionality. Manages professional staff and student assistants that coordinate partnership support for service learning courses campus-wide, including the effective implementation of the MySLP/S4 Partnership Database system. Oversees development and implementation of service learning risk management processes. Supervises the Program Assistant in managing SLI online databases, folders, and website to create an effective information hub to support all constituencies in the service learning process. Oversees development of training materials to support effective service learning partnerships.
Coordination of SLI Evaluation Processes:
Responsible for overseeing evaluation of the service learning support processes to ensure effective service learning, the building of mutually-beneficial campus-community partnerships, and supporting SLI's continuing development as a learning organization. Coordinates the development and implementation of regular evaluation processes for service learning courses, including, student, community partner, and faculty evaluation. Responsible for dissemination of evaluation-derived insights to faculty and community partners. Supports research to highlight programmatic impact and effectiveness, especially with regard to issues of social justice, equity, inclusion and civic engagement. Identifies research and evaluation needs, and generates evaluation and research projects when necessary.
Community Based Research & Collaboration
: Provides leadership for the development of community-university research partnerships and collaborative knowledge creation efforts. Facilitates diverse opportunities for faculty-community collaboration. Oversees delivery of service and social justice-related programming for campus and external community that contributes to more just, thriving, and sustainable communities. Seeks opportunities to develop reciprocal community-campus partnerships that advance shared priorities.
SLI Event and Publication Coordination:
Oversees the management of the SLI yearly calendar of events and publications. Develops and oversees the publication and distribution of written and electronic materials related to CSUMB's service learning program, including semi-annual newsletters, annual fact pages, web-based information dissemination, brochures, etc. Oversees coordination of faculty, community partner, and student leader workshops, training and annual Spotlight on Service Award Ceremony. Coordinates annual SLI awards, including: Service Learning Awards; Penn Partnership Award; Civic Action Award. Organizes SLI's participation in CSUMB outreach and recruitment efforts. Identifies needs for additional training and professional development events, and works with SLI faculty and staff on their implementation.
Leadership for Service Learning Institute:
Assists SLI Director in overall direction and policy development for SLI. Assists in facilitating strategic planning, staff development retreats and meetings. Assists in developing grant proposals and other fund-raising initiatives. Serves as the SLI liaison with Enrollment Services to support student recruitment and advising events. Serves as the SLI liaisons with Student Affairs units such as Otter Cross-Cultural Center, Multicultural Greek Council, Residential Life, etc., to support development of co-curricular service activities and programs. Collaborates with the SLI team to carry out the CSUMB Vision and SLI Philosophy and Mission. Provides leadership for the SLI in the absence of the Director.
Other Functions:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with diverse students, faculty, staff and community partners in a multicultural environment. Familiarity and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and to the SLI's social justice approach to service learning. Commitment to cultivating social responsibility, cultural awareness and an ethic of civic engagement, both personally and professionally. Knowledge and experience with training programs that develop participants' skills in social justice approaches to service learning and civic engagement.
Experience with the implementation of enterprise software applications to support effective information gathering, communications and tracking systems in a complex organizational environment. Demonstrated ability in organizational communication, including both print and electronic media. Knowledge of and experience with diverse approaches to program evaluation, and demonstrated ability to design and implement data-gathering and analysis efforts to facilitate organizational learning. Knowledge of sound management practices and the demonstrated ability to cultivate, organize, evaluate and manage a dynamic, collaborative staff. Demonstrated ability to gather varied data, analyze complex problems, visualize operational and program implications, develop alternative approaches and take appropriate action. Demonstrated ability to plan for short and long-range needs, to make effective judgments and perform a variety of administrative duties. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to use a personal computer and appropriate software to manage complex data gathering and analysis processes to write reports and make effective presentations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to a Master's degree in a related field from an accredited college/university AND
a minimum of three (3) years experience in implementing college-level service learning programs, multiculturalism and diversity programs, or community-based organization work. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional experience, which has demonstrated the requisite skills and abilities, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE
Experience with social-justice approaches to community-engaged work. Experience with program evaluation and data analysis. Ability to interface with IT specialists in the implementation of effective enterprise software applications. Knowledge of web-design, social media tools, and other effective electronic communication strategies. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation, facilitation and interpersonal skills. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the Core Values of: student-centeredness; intellectual curiosity; creativity and innovation; integrity, accountability and mutual respect; diversity, equity and inclusion; service and civic engagement; sustainability; and, global orientation. Personal experience working in diverse and multicultural communities and life experience grounded in community and civic engagement. Background in participatory action research and other community based research practices.
Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 15.5, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
There are components of this job which are deemed essential on campus. This position will primarily work on the main campus, with occasional work from home. This position requires working on campus with students. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. In the fall, students, faculty, staff, and the community can expect that masks will be required and that the appropriate degree of social distancing will be in place in all areas based on evolving guidance. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to be vaccinated before coming to campus.
