Department and Program Overview:
The Department of Music at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. of New Jersey is a community of musician-educators committed to professionalism in teaching, performance and creative activity, scholarship, and community service. We collaborate to provide the foundations of professional musicianship for all music majors at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to help all students discover the central role of music in the university context, and to create a thriving cultural life on the campus and in the community through performances at the highest artistic level. We provide the resources, guidance, and diverse environment that motivate our students to seek excellence as they build and maintain careers in music.
The Department of Music offers BA, BM and MM degrees. BM programs provide professional training with a performance focus, with degrees in Jazz Studies, Music Education, Music and Entertainment Industries, Performance, and Sound Engineering Arts. The two BA degrees, Music Studies and Music Studies with Popular Music Emphasis, are liberal arts degrees, with less emphasis on performance. At the graduate level three concentrations within the Master of Music are offered: Jazz Studies (available with either a performance or arranging emphasis), Music Education, and Music and Entertainment Industries. The music department partners with WP's Cotsakos College of Business in an MBA with a Music Industries concentration. Regular performances include large and small ensembles of students and faculty on the Midday Recital Series, the New Music Series, the Jazz Room Series, and in individual special concerts.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music, Emphasis in Popular Music serves to study contemporary popular music through the lens of social media and through the study of songwriting. Social media has become the conduit through which music is marketed, discussed and disseminated. This is true for the large music and entertainment industry conglomerates as well as for independent artists. Thus an examination of popular music now requires a study of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, blogging and the like. To more completely grasp the nature of contemporary popular music an introduction to the songwriting process if offered. Students graduating from this program might find themselves managing a social media campaign for Facebook, Twitter, etc., for a musical other than business concern. They may enter the worlds of music journalism. Ethnomusicology, music licensing public relations, legal professions, or they might use the knowledge gained for advancing their own musical aspirations.
