This four year award is open to students embarking on PhD research at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. in the School of History starting in May or September 2022 investigating visual communication during the religious upheavals of the sixteenth century. We are looking for applicants interested in pursuing original research to be supervised by Dr Drew Thomas and Professor Alexander Wilkinson.
The successful applicant will join a project funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council entitled ‘Applying Artificial Intelligence to the Printing Press: Transforming Visual Communication During the Protestant Reformation’. Although Gutenberg’s printing press is best remembered for transforming Europe’s literary landscape, it also transformed visual communication. Nowhere is this clearer than in the religious upheavals of the sixteenth century. Printed images and illustrations were used by Catholics and Protestants to build and support their religious identities and to denigrate their opponents. Yet the sheer number of these images has made it difficult to approach beyond sampling or specific case studies. Leveraging artificial intelligence, this project will use UCD’s Ornamento image dataset to train computers to recognise, identify and describe the subjects represented in the illustrations used in approximately 60,000 printed books of the early modern Holy Roman Empire.
The research student will assist in the work of the project and use the image corpus to undertake a dissertation on the provisional topic of ‘Visual Communication in the Post-Tridentine Holy Roman Empire: The Construction of Lutheran, Calvinist and Catholic Identities, 1563-1600’. With the Council of Trent ending in 1563 this period provides a perfect case study on how German Catholics adapted their iconographies to serve the purpose of the Catholic Reformations and how protestants used images to grow and sustain their movements. The PhD student will investigate how confessions used and borrowed iconographies to create confessional identities. While this research topic indicates the general area of research, other ideas are welcome in the cover letter.
