Department Information
The Department of History and Philosophy provides the highest quality in teaching for each of our majors and general education students. Beyond careful conveyance of salient content, departmental instruction aims to develop higher-order thinking, meaningful self-reflection, and understanding. Students should emerge from History and Philosophy courses with a deepened understanding of their own culture, as well as the culture and world views of others. They should embrace the importance of life-long learning, possess enhanced written and oral communication skills, and be prepared to serve as able advocates for the betterment of society.
We encourage and value effective teaching that engages a diverse student body in the learning process. We aim to foster student-faculty and interdepartmental dialogue and teaching in the pursuit of both individual projects and collective knowledge, and we strive to be a community of mutually supportive scholars whose members share ideas and expertise with one another.
With more than 400 full-time faculty and 8000 degree-seeking students, the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest college at the university, prepares the next generation of leaders in a wide array of fields to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century and become contributing citizens in a global society. The home of three Schools and eight Departments, the College offers more than 80 graduate and undergraduate programs of study in both traditional and interdisciplinary fields. RCHSS provides students experiential learning opportunities to enable them to develop leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, as well as a strong sense of social responsibility through community and global engagement.
The Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of History and Philosophy promote diversity and inclusiveness among our students, faculty, staff, and public.
