I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Job Description Summary:
The Research Scientist will assist the
GWNIC
Director and senior staff scientist at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. to oversee the provision of university-wide core resources for acquisition, enhancement, and analysis of electron microscopy images.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversees the day-to-day operations of 3 electron microscopes; assists in the design and implementation of the Center's operational policies and procedures; and identifies the need for new technology and pathways for acquisition and long-term maintenance.
Provides consultation services in research project design, implementation and publications and scientific and technical leadership on various funded or proposed research projects
Hands-on laboratory work will be performed as necessary on a consultation basis on critical or difficult problems involving the development of new theories, approaches, or methodologies or as a part of the R&D effort of the Center.
Develops and implements a multilevel instrument operational training program for each instrument, aligned with the proper conduct and research integrity.
Implements partnerships with commercial partners training courses, outreach of new technology and methodology
usually via extensive demonstrations and long-term partnership activities.
In conjunction with the Director, leads the Center's outreach activities, both within and outside the institution.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Master's degree plus 5 years of experience or a PhD plus 2 years of experience in a related discipline to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD/Masters in biomedical, engineering or basic sciences. Five years in the field of electron microscopy or related area to include 2-5 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed.
PhD/Masters in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biomedical Engineering, Anatomy or related field.
Experience in electron microscopy or related area to include 2-5 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed; experience must include planning, conducting and reporting as primary responsibility.
Excellent knowledge in electron microscopy fundamental principles and theory and hands on experience with transmission (
TEM
) and scanning (
SEM
) electron microscopy, sample preparation including chemical fixation and contrasting techniques.
Key skills with
TEM
and
SEM
operational skills in combination of willingness to acquire new skills such as serial block face, focus ion beam serial EM sections and lamellae.
Understanding of the electron optics, the interaction of the electrons with the matter and the resulting byproducts of this interaction and their detection.
Familiarity with alignment, image processing and image analysis. Familiarity and willingness to work in shared research facility including providing supporting to a broad portfolio of research investigators and managing core administration.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate and work in several collaborative activities at the same time.
Provide high-quality training on the instrument use and scientific advice.
Publication record using electron microscopy and enthusiasm for future methodological and scientific publications and presentations.
Typical Hiring Range
$83,914.78 - $122,504.54
