This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Major Duties
Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President of University Effectiveness, Planning, and Analytics, the Research Analyst is responsible for producing information on institutional data to advance the University's educational policy, administrative decisions, strategic planning, and assessment activities. This includes but is not limited to producing various ad hoc reports for departments, administrators, and committees on academic performance, outcomes assessment, department accreditation, self-studies, and grant reporting; and carrying out research studies from design to final analysis; and processing, editing, and finalizing official student and course census files. The Research Analyst investigates data integrity issues and recommends programming changes within the Peoplesoft Information System.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
Required: Graduation from a four-year college or university.
Required: Three (3) years of progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience, a professional analytical experience which demonstrates the ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred: Masters degree in education research, social sciences, evaluation, psychometrics or other related disciplines.
Preferred: Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in institutional research, assessment and planning in higher education, preferably within a comprehensive university. Standardized CSU coding schemes and data files used in the University and the preparation of mandatory and ad-hoc Chancellor's Office reports.
Additional qualifying professional experience may be substituted
for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• Research methodology, survey design, sampling techniques, statistical analysis, and various assessment tools and strategies. How to choose the appropriate tool and statistical test to answer complex questions, including but not limited to correlations, trend analyses, frequency distribution analyses, and regression. Sound approaches to address issues that emerge in live data sets and working with mixed methodology.
• Database management practices on a PC environment.
• Relational databases, statistical software, spreadsheets.
• Reference material development.
Ability to:
• Plan, organize, and conduct analytic studies of institutional data in response to the diverse needs of a broad constituency of campus personnel.
• Design and conduct survey research studies through all stages of development, collaborating with necessary constituencies from initial conceptualization to final publication.
• Apply appropriate research methodology and reporting techniques to facilitate meaningful interpretation of institutional data.
• Make analytical assessments of statistical data in terms of relevance and policy implications.
• Provides consultative services to constituencies in identifying their data needs to meet their stated objective.
• Prepare and present research findings to a broad campus constituency in a way that facilitates sound understanding and utilization of the results.
• Initiate and develop computer processes to retrieve, merge, and report information from multiple databases, systems, and electronic files.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels, work cooperatively with other members of the unit and handle highly sensitive and confidential situations.
• Raise issues and recommendations to the team and the Data Governance Committee for review and resolution.
• Work independently as well as collaboratively on complex problems and work assignments.
• Perform duties requiring a high degree of concentration, innovation and originality.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects.
• Develop new report formats, dashboards, and tools to support emerging needs across campus.
• Apply accessible technology guidelines to data visualizations.
• Develop documentation for new processes, procedures, and tools.
• Ability to anticipate, identify and manage appropriate human and technological resources.
Skill in:
• Systems analysis, programming, and database management on institutional data sets.
• Research application software (i.e., statistical reporting, relational database management, query tools, and spreadsheets).
• Problem-solving with the ability to apply those skills innovatively across a broad spectrum of issues and to develop new structures and procedures as needed.
• Communication that is clear and effective both orally and in writing with a diverse campus community.
• Maintaining cooperative working relationships with diverse populations. Includes practicing reflective listening skills to interpret and identify needs and requirements to develop successful solutions.
• Proactively engaging in ongoing professional development, identifying emerging tools and new strategies.
• Contributing ideas that can benefit projects across the team, including sharing leading practices.
Responsibilities
55% Responds to ad hoc data requests from departments, administrators, committees, and external agencies on a wide range of topics including academic performance, outcomes assessment, department accreditation, self-studies, and various reports measuring student enrollment patterns over time. Develops data use guides, develops and delivers training on the use of common office tools in individual, group, workshop, and other settings.
20% Conducts and/or administers survey research studies, produces reports on such studies, and writes an analysis of important findings. Compiles and reports on data requested through external surveys. Responds to requests for statistical information to support grant efforts, research reporting, and campus-wide initiatives.
15% Leverages files from multiple sources and across types (e.g., beyond student data, including faculty and other types) to create new insights and actionable reports. Processes data integrity validation efforts, delivers reports on data and information issues and connects with data owners and governance to address needs for quality and improvement. Performs database management tasks. Advances use of tools for efficient reporting
5% Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or administrators.
