Essential Job Duties:
The Safety Assistant reports directly to the NC State Facilities Division Safety Specialist and assists with the execution of safety protocols to ensure that every employee understands and follows health and safety regulations to improve compliance and create a culture of safety. This position is primarily responsible for the wellbeing of all Facilities Division employees.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
The Safety Assistant will assist the Safety Specialist in monitoring and adapting safety procedures and operations to ensure a safe and fully compliant work environment for all employees. The main duties and responsibilities for this position include:
Assists with the elimination of hazards from a workplace.
Advises the Facilities Teams on safety issues and compliance in specific projects and operations.
Conducts routine safety inspections.
Maintains accurate and current records in accordance with OSHA and NC State guidelines.
Schedules Safety Audits and maintains reports of all outcomes.
Conducts safety surveillance and regulatory activities on campus, to include identifying opportunities to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, and health problems.
Supports training classes and outreach activities concerning applicable safety standards as well as policies, regulations, safety culture, and procedures.
Reviews safety training and recommends revisions, improvements, and updates.
Inspects safety equipment and recommends replacement when necessary.
Drafts and implements internal safety standards and policies.
Reviews incident reports, and recommends appropriate action to prevent future incidents.
Serves as a safety liaison for the Facility Divisions Action Safety Committee.
Updates and maintains safety metrics for live viewing on the Facilities Division Safety Dashboard.
Required Qualifications:
Effective organizational, communication and training skills a must.
Knowledge of regulations associated with hazardous material management and emergency planning, preparedness and response
Experience with regulations and program management
Considerable knowledge of database use and management to track performance outcomes.
Demonstrates understanding and application of regulatory codes/directives to implement institutional practices and develop corrective actions
Knowledge of a broad array of hazards to effectively performing program functions
Strong interpersonal communication skills for assisting others.
Keen sense of organizational direction and awareness to predict needs and make sound recommendations for solutions
Demonstrated understanding and working knowledge of regulations and best practices associated with scope of practice
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of OSHA 1926 construction and 1910 general industry standards and best practices
5 years of relevant experience
Required license or certification:
North Carolina Driver's License required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
