Full time starting salary is normally in the range £27,924 to £30,497. With potential progression once in post to £34,304 a year.

The technician will support research activities on processing of permanent magnetic materials at two sites; at the plasma building (Metallurgy and Materials) on UoB campus and at the Tyseley Energy Park (TEP). The postholder will be responsible for maintaining the magnet production lines which are in development, alongside 3 other technicians, including equipment such as a hydrogen pressure vessel, powder production line (including a jet mill), presses and sintering furnaces.
This role will involve taking the initiative to diagnose and resolve problems, implementing upgrades and improvements for any equipment for which they are responsible, and delivering samples required by the various research projects and students. The post holder will also be involved in implementing a change management system in the wider facility environment.
The postholder will be expected to produce pressed and sintered permanent magnet samples at different sizes and shapes for commercial end users, working closely with postdocs and PhD students. The post holder will provide training in the use of equipment and safety procedures to UoB staff, students, and external companies.
A key part of the role involves taking responsibility for ensuring safe operation of relevant equipment and services by ensuring that safety paperwork is up to date and is being followed by users, and any statutory inspections are carried out on time. In particular this will include safety systems for pressure vessels, pyrophoric powders and pressing procedures. The post holder will also perform duties associated with keeping the buildings safe and operational as advised by the Building Manager and Technical Manager on UoB campus and with Webster and Horsfall at TEP.
The post holder may need to operate out of normal working hours to accommodate experimental procedures.
Skills and Experience Required:
Experience working in a compliance based organisation
Knowledge of working within an engineering environment.
Extensive relevant workplace experience, equivalent professional qualification, or degree in an appropriate subject (e.g. - mechanical engineering, materials, electrical engineering or chemical engineering).
In-depth practical knowledge of relevant technical and scientific methods including vacuum systems, sintering furnaces and pressure systems.
Previous experience of working with process equipment eg- furnaces, powder processing equipment or gas handling systems.
Extensive experience of similar laboratory based work, together with familiarity with a wide range of laboratory equipment.
Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of working practices/requirements.
