Profile

The Croft School – Head of School (Providence) Start Date: Early Summer 2022   About The Croft School  The Croft School is a young independent school in Providence, Rhode Island.  Having opened in Fall 2018, our school currently serves 90 students in Kindergarten through Grade 3.   Over time, the school will grow into a 270-student K-8 school.    The Croft School provides an engaging, innovative, child-centered program to its  students and a unique parent-oriented experience to its families, all within a tight-knit, diverse, and joyous environment.   Our classrooms balance high-quality math, reading, and writing instruction with innovative project-based learning, age-appropriate opportunities for play, and weekly nature explorations or community trips. The school has quickly become a highly-popular option among families in and around Providence, with significantly more enrollment interest than available seat capacity. The Croft School has sister schools in the Jamaica Plain (founded 2020) and South End (opening 2022) neighborhoods of Boston. More information about our school can be found here: ****.   About The Role   The Croft School in Providence is seeking an exceptional Head of School.    During its first two years in operation, the school was led by Croft’s Founder / Executive Director.  During the last two school years (including the current one), the school has been led by a Director of Program in partnership with our Founder / Executive Director.  It is the right time in the school’s evolution and growth to establish the school’s long-term leadership structure by hiring an outstanding Head of School. The Head of School will work in close partnership with The Croft School’s Founder and Executive Director, Scott Given, as well as with a small, high-performing school leadership team. The Head of School will lead and oversee day-to-day programming at The Croft School and serve as the primary liaison to all of the school’s families.  Among other responsibilities, the Head of School will:  Ensure the student program, including all curriculum and instruction, is executed with excellence and in alignment with the school’s ambitious goals;  Establish a positive, fun, relationship-driven school-wide culture — for students, for families, and for our school team;  Hold our team accountable to an educational approach that is innovative, balanced, joyful and genuinely personalized, meeting each child’s interests and needs;  Ensure team members are effectively coached, supported, and managed; Ensure The Croft School has the requisite qualities and professional climate such that outstanding teachers would like to remain part of the school for many years; Develop close, trusting relationships with all of the school’s families and students; and Cultivate and sustain strong relationships with community and partner organizations; and Cultivate enrollment interest in the school among local families and, in partnership with others, support the admissions and enrollment processes. The Head of School will not have primary responsibility over the school’s financial management or marketing, nor over facility expansion and construction management;  these functions will be led by other members of the team. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial team leader who continually seeks out ways in which the school can “raise the bar” and innovate beyond the school’s existing level of high performance.  Further, the ideal candidate will be deeply committed to and skilled at advancing our school’s anti-bias and anti-racism work (see below). The candidate most qualified for this role is likely to have had experience as the leader of — or on a leadership team at — a high-performing charter, independent, or otherwise autonomous school.       Qualifications and Qualities   3 years of leadership team experience in a high-performing school setting, ideally as a Head of School / Principal.  Expertise in elementary and middle school education, particularly in the domains of student-centered and results-driven curriculum and pedagogy; project-based learning and play-oriented learning; and the development and oversight of a joyous, welcoming school environment Top-tier managerial and coaching skills, sharpened through direct oversight of other teachers and educators An entrepreneurial spirit coupled with an ambitious work ethic, as well as a natural desire to go above and beyond to serve students and their families in both expected and unexpected ways. Self-reflectiveness, humility, and an eagerness to continually improve one’s practice. A strong desire to remain in this role for 7 years.
